Models posing tips

Model is a very versatile profession and is not as easy as just standing in front of a camera and looking pretty. It takes much more to create an impressive image. Posing may at first appear simple, however there is a lot of contorting, twisting, pushing out and sucking in involved.
Different types of modelling tend to require different poses. Here are a few posing tips for Fashion and Glamour modelling;
All types of modelling
  1. Try to create unusual shapes with your arms and legs, by bending them in different ways
  2. Exaggerate the pose, it may feel awkward and odd but will look great on camera
  3. Accentuate long limbs as much as possible. The closer a body part is to the camera the longer or larger it will look, the further away it is the shorter or smaller it will look
  4. When sitting, slightly raise your legs and the side of the body that is closer to camera. This stops "squidging" happening and keeps you looking slim
  5. When Lying down never lie totally flat, arch your back slightly to create a curve. Lying flat can end up with a flat looking image and make you look lifeless and limp
  6. Pose from top to toe. Meaning that you need to think about every part of your body when posing. An awkward foot or oddly missing hand can ruin an otherwise amazing image
  7. remember where your light is. Lighting can make or break a shot. If you cant find your light or know how to use it to your advantage it can affect the outcome. Anything that is in shadow disappears, anything in light is enhanced
  8. Remember what you are wearing. Show of the outfit to its full potential, but do not let it over power you. The same goes for hair and make-up, you have to own the image regardless of how you are styled
  9. Practice in front of the mirror AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Learn what every inch of your face and body looks like
  10. Vary expressions and poses. These do not have to be huge variations, subtle movements can work just as well
Fashion Modelling
  1. Try not to push boobs and bums out too much as that can turn a fashion image into a more glamour style image
  2. Limber up. Being able to twist and contort is vital in fashion modelling. Clients like to see something different
  3. To disguise a large bust, arch shoulders forward
  4. Keep facial muscles as relaxed as possible as not to create a tense look
  5. Study the latest fashion mags for current posing trends
Glamour
  1. Glamour is about sexiness. Emphasise curves by arching your back to push out your bottom and boobs. But not too much so it looks overly obvious
  2. To enhance your bust drop your shoulders and push them back
  3. A lot of glamour work involves good eye contact with the camera. To make eyes have feeling do not keep them wide eyed, this will look like a deer in the headlights, instead slightly "squint" the eyes
  4. Pouting is great for enhancing lips, but you don't have to always pout. Smiling can be just as effective. Also, letting the lips part ever so slightly can help relax the face muscles and stop you looking tense
  5. Study lads mags for the latest posing trends
